The Ease of Living Index 2018 was released by Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs Minister, Hardeep Singh Puri on Monday (13 Aug 2018). Ease of Living Index is made upon four major factors including governance (25 points), social infrastructure (25 points), economic infrastructure (5 points) and physical (45 points). Each city was given a score between 0 and 100.
“The ease of living assessment covers several metrics critical to track progress towards the Sustainable Development Goals in an urban environment. The analysis of data will also in turn encourage authorities concerned to know where to focus in the coming months,” Hardeep Puri said.
According to Ease of Living Index report Pune (Highest score 58.11), Navi Mumbai and Greater Mumbai and Thane in Maharashtra are the three most livable cities in India, where the capital of India (Delhi) came at 65th place out of total 111 cities. Rampur in Uttar Pradesh figured at the bottom of Index and Kohima (Nagaland) and Patna (Bihar) were also placed in the bottom three.
In the top ten cities, the four cities are from Maharashtra, Pune (1st), Navi Mumbai (2nd), Greater Mumbai (3rd) and Thane (6th) other cities in top 10 are, Tirupati, Chandigarh, Raipur, Indore, Vijayawada and Bhopal.
Varanasi, Prime Minister's constituency, was ranked 33, Ahmadabad at 23rd and Hyderabad at 27th. Chennai was ranked at 14th place. Kolkata and three other cities in West Bengal did not participate in the survey.
No city from Tamil Nadu and Uttar Pradesh in the top ten.
Srinagar ranked at 100th place, Jammu at 95th place, Aligarh 86th place, Rai Bareli 49th place and Ghaziabad is at 46th place. Moreover, Naya Raipur and Amaravati did not fit into the parameters as these are Greenfield cities.
