eSIM, electronic SIM or embedded SIM card is the new technology firstly introduced in 2017, Google’s pixel 2 smartphone. eSIMs is similar to your regular plastic SIM card and works in a same manner. eSIM is a small sized chip, same to your regular SIM card which is placed inside your phone. This chip or eSIM can’t be swapped or removed, these are the virtual SIMs supported by the network or carrier and enabled by them.
eSIM is rewritable, means you can change your operator with a simple phone call. You can easily change your data plan and other settings in a few minutes.
When it’s coming?
Currently eSIMs are supported only in 10 countries, India is newly added in the list. Recently launched iPhone 2018 series supports eSIM. Austria, Canada, Croatia, Czech Republic, Germany, Hungry, India, Spain, United Kingdom and United States are the only countries in the world that supports eSIM.
Newly launched iPhone XS, iPhone XS Max and iPhone XR supports eSIMs only for Reliance Jio and Airtel subscribers in India. In the US, AT&T, T-Mobile USA and Verizon Wireless support eSIM. eSIM is backed by the GSMA, the association of mobile networks. The GSMA has defined the standadrd for eSIM worldwide.
Scope of eSIM:
eSIM is the future technology, that in some years we will see it in every device. It’s a game changer technology for devices. The big advantage for devices is from design view that you make a smaller devices because there is no space for SIM tray.
Network manufacturer or distributer are no longer to make a lots of SIM cards, It will be cost saving. eSIM will also be great for other devices includes laptops and tablets where seamless connectivity can be provided.
Cost of eSIM:
Currently in India, eSIM is free, but in future telecom operator may charge monthly for this service. In other countries for eSIMs telecom operator charging up to $10 monthly to use this service.
How to use eSIM in your iPhone XS and XS Max:
Activate through Network provider app:
-Go to the App store and download your network provider’s app.
-In app, choose your favourite plan and purchase.
Activate with QR code:
-Go to Settings > Cellular.
-Tap to Add Cellular Plan.
-Scan the QR code using your iPhone, that your carrier provided. You may be asked for to enter an activation code.
